Thingyan Festival

YEAR

Thingyan (meaning “change” in Burmese)—also known as the Burmese Water Festival—is an annual cultural practice that celebrates the New Year in Myanmar (Burma). It is a time of meritorious deeds, renewal, and prosperity, involving a splashing or dousing of water to symbolize the cleansing of sins and immoralities accumulated from the previous year.

The identity—including the landing webpage and physical/digital tickets—blends tradition with modernity, drawing inspiration from vintage Burmese mythology and stamps, while incorporating vibrant, kaleidoscopic photography taken and edited by me.

Alternative approaches to the poster design included abstract and representational approaches (respectively, see below), but were ultimately discarded in favor of a symbolic approach.

Between the World and Me Cover Redesign

TYPE

Book Cover

YEAR

2021

Type-based and image-based cover redesigns for Ta-Nehisi Coates' book, Between the World and Me.

I used a boot print motif to allude to themes of black struggle and agency in the US. Ta-Nehisi Coates writes, “I didn’t realize that the boot on your neck is just as likely to make you delusional as it is to ennoble." He asserts that although they do not have control over systemic oppression, they can and must "fashion the way of [their] walk."

I painted a portrait of Coates and his son using watercolour, as the book is an intergenerational transfer of knowledge. Coates recounts his childhood experiences with abuse, expressing his hopes of breaking this cycle with his son. I used red yarn to separate and isolate the subject on the front cover.
